Barefoot shoes are no longer flippers: how to choose good-looking barefoot shoes

Remember when barefoot shoes looked more like part of a clown costume? A huge toe box, a flat shape and a design that said: “At least it's healthy.” Today you no longer have to choose between comfort and what you actually like. We'll show you how far barefoot design has come, how to spot truly good-looking barefoot shoes and how to wear them in the city, at work and in the evening.

Why barefoot shoes looked like flippers for so long

The first barefoot shoes were all about function. The widest possible toe box, the thinnest possible sole, zero drop. Design came second.

You know the result: a shape copying the foot one to one, chunky rubber rims and colours that go with almost nothing. If you wanted to do something for your feet, you simply put up with the looks. If you wanted to look good, you stayed in narrow shoes.

On top of that, barefoot got labelled as a “movement”. Many people only wore their barefoot shoes on weekends in the woods – not to the office or on a date. We think it doesn't have to be that way.

What are barefoot shoes (and what doesn't make them flippers)

Barefoot shoes stand on three principles:

  • Wide toe box – your toes have room and don't have to squeeze together.
  • Zero drop – the heel and the toes are at the same height.
  • Flexible sole – the shoe bends with your foot, not against it.

Notice that none of them says a shoe has to look like a flipper. A wide toe box can be cleanly rounded. You can't see zero drop from the outside at all. And a flexible sole can hide inside an elegant silhouette.

At Skinners, we're not orthodox either. Our city shoes combine the best of barefoot and conventional footwear: the wide toe box and zero drop are complemented by a comfortable insole, so pavements and asphalt won't wear you down. That's why we like to say they're more than just barefoot.

How to choose barefoot shoes that actually look good

The best barefoot shoes are the ones you'll want to wear every day. Here's a quick checklist:

  1. Silhouette. Look at the shoe from the side and from above. The toe box should be roomy, but rounded and clean – not “duck-like”.
  2. Material. Smooth leather keeps its shape, ages beautifully and works with jeans as well as a blazer. Textile is great for summer.
  3. Colours. Black, white, brown or navy go with almost everything. One versatile pair does more than three eccentric ones.
  4. Details. Less is more. Clean stitching, a subtle logo, no unnecessary decoration.
  5. Comfort on hard surfaces. If you mostly walk around the city, you'll appreciate an insole that cushions each step on the pavement.
  6. Size. Measure the length of your foot and follow the size chart of the specific model. Your toes should have a little free space in front of them (5–10 mm).

Leather barefoot shoes: Moonwalker proves it can be done

Our Moonwalkers are leather barefoot sneakers born from exactly this idea. And our customers turned them into a bestseller.

  • Premium smooth leather upper – elegant, durable and suitable from spring to autumn.
  • Pigskin lining with ultra-soft TENCEL™ in the toe – absorbs moisture well and helps keep a pleasant foot temperature.
  • Zero drop, a wide toe box and light, flexible materials – everything you expect from barefoot shoes.
  • Designed in Czechia, made in Portugal.
  • Sizes 36–47 – as women's and men's barefoot shoes.

The most popular one is Moonwalker Black. Black smooth leather, a clean silhouette and no compromises. If you want even fewer details, go for Moonwalker All Black – a special edition where we replaced the silver logo with a more subtle finish. And if you like a higher cut, choose the ankle-high Moonwalker High Top.

You can also choose from white, brown or navy versions. They all have one thing in common: at first glance, nobody can tell they're barefoot shoes.

Barefoot sneakers for the city, the office and the evening

You can tell good-looking barefoot shoes by the fact that you don't leave them at home. A few tips on how to wear them:

  • At the office. Black or brown leather barefoot shoes go with chinos, straight trousers and a casual blazer. Comfortable all day, and nobody will ask what you've got on your feet.
  • Around town. White barefoot sneakers are a safe bet with jeans, a T-shirt and cashmere. Barefoot in the city doesn't have to mean a compromise – the soft insole absorbs the cobblestones.
  • For women. Light-coloured women’s barefoot sneakers look great with dresses, a midi skirt or wide-leg trousers. Comfortable for a coffee, errands or a full day out in the city.
  • For men. Men’s barefoot shoes in black or dark brown are a versatile wardrobe staple. One pair handles a week at work and the weekend.
  • In the evening. All-black smooth leather can handle formal-ish occasions too. As dressy barefoot shoes with dark trousers and a shirt, you definitely won't look out of place.
